Mo Vibez has been a force in the bass underground since the SoundCloud era, known for gritty sound design and a no-rules approach to production. His new album Bad Behaviour, out August 1, distills that energy into eight tracks of pure, raw bass music.

We caught up with him, inspired, just after a festival set in Germany to talk about the record’s backstory, his collab with Chee, and Vienna’s underground bass scene.

Hey Mo Vibez, how’s it going?

I’m doing fine, just played a super inspiring festival in Germany, and I feel like I’m making my sickest tunes at the moment, feeling motivated to play shows and release music.

You just released your album Bad Behaviour on August 1st. What’s the story behind it? How long was it in the making, and what idea did you want to capture?

Originally, I planned to do like a 2-sided good/evil, yin/yang kinda project. The main idea started 2 years ago, but I kept swapping out songs and overthinking the whole thing, so I decided to release some songs from the “bad” side as a full project.

Out of all the tracks, do you have a personal favorite? What makes it stand out for you?

Not really, I have dope memories and feelings creating each one, like UFC is a 3-year-old idea I rediscovered and finished lately, Like This is the last track I produced for the Album, trying to match the vibe and go crazy with the sound design. I’m sitting on a lot of music, but I try to finish the ones that give me chills or make me go!

There’s also your collab with Chee, Ragemode. How did that come together, and what was it like working with him?

I’ve been a fan of his stuff since the good old Soundcloud days and sent him a couple of ideas a few years back. Ragemode was one of the ideas. I kinda forgot about the track and found it a few weeks before the album release, and finally managed to finish it.

You also create sample packs with your Vibeout series. What’s your process when building a pack? How do you decide what goes in, and who do you imagine using them?

I sample stuff from my songs and projects. Or I do sound design sessions and record them mainly for myself, but I share them with my Patreons every month. I try to put creative, unique sounds in them. From weird bass noises to tight drum layer loops, I think there’s stuff for everybody and all kinda genres of music, but I think most packs are best for bass music / drum & bass / UKG producers

Speaking of music production, are there any rituals or habits you rely on in the studio to stay creative?

I only make music if I feel inspired. For example, in the last two, three months, I barely started ideas and focused on other things in life.
Then I played a show 2 weeks ago and felt otherworldly inspired after. Since then, I started about 15 ideas, and like half of them are really good. So I try to stay on this wave and finish as much as I can. I lock in for hours, but I don’t force the process.

You’re from Vienna, a city with a strong drum & bass identity thanks to artists like Camo & Krooked and Mefjus, and venues like Flex. How would you describe the bass scene there right now?

I think drum and bass is still going big, but underground bass music is definitely on the rise. And I’m happy to be a part of it. I get excited when I find a sick tune and see the producer is from Vienna!

In your Adrenaline guest mix, is there a track that carries a special meaning for you? Maybe a story behind it, or a moment that hit differently when you played it?

Not a single track, but the whole mood! I tried to keep it tight and have that gangsta/stank face energy the whole set. I tried to combine a lot of new unreleased music with bangers I collected over the years.

Looking ahead, what’s next for you? Any projects or collaborations we should be on the lookout for?

I’m working on a lot of different music lately, and also sitting on many, many tracks, so I try to have fun and share a lot of music with the world, and hope people enjoy
